Year 12

Year eight – 2006-2007

REVIEW OF 2007 by Merv Brindley

Retiring President Merv Brindley gave his Annual Report for

The Year 2007

He commenced the October Monthly meeting by thanking all the past committee for their support over the last year.

Merv spoke of the initial forming of PSN. He told us a little about Mary Crane’s report that does appear on the History website.

He said that in May 2001 there were 158 members enrolled and we were granted over six thousand dollars to set the wheels in motion. At that time Seniors, it was felt, needed to keep up with the revolution of technology. PSN not only set up their own group but also assisted other groups beyond the Peel Region to get started by sharing their expertise.

PSN added another dimension to retirees, Merv said.

“It is all about people helping people”.

We also showed our appreciation of his work and guidance, whilst struggling with some serious health problems during the last year.

He was pleased to announce that most positions were filled.

Club News :-

Buddies

Buddies have continued to assist members through the year and a ‘Meet the Buddies Session’ proved to be successful.

The committee members have also done a great job in helping out in the Open Sessions on the 1 st & 3 rd Wednesdays in the Computer Room. These have included several Workshop Sessions.

The grant to put on the ‘First click & Second Click’ programs commenced. These are basic courses on ‘computer use free of charge. Starting with understanding terms & technology, emailing printing etc. and removing the fear of computers, progressing to building on those skills and is designed to give more confidence and to become familiar with banking over the internet , shopping on line , downloading, web cam and communication skills. Angela Lewis the Co-ordinator of the programs became instrumental in encouraging and helping us apply for the grant to run these programs as directed by the WA Department of Education and Training. Peel SeniorNet partnered with Angela’s company NetFX in order to deliver the training.

Social Outings

Kath Sheehan has organised a variety of Social outings during the year that included visits to Ninos, a picnic lunch at Dawsville, Edenvale Pinjarra, The Merchant Tea Company, Mei Jing Restaurant, Hans Cafe on the Boardwalk and ……… Geranium World. ………..

Speakers. Arthur Turvey has organised a steady flow of great speakers including ‘Champagne Travel from‘Insight Tours’, Justin Thomas from Cartridge World who have received the ‘ Regional Award’ twice, our own Russell Masters Vice President, gave an Introduction to the Microsoft Money Program. We gained a lot of information on broadband, Wireless and ASDL. Norm Cox & colleagues spoke to us on ‘Reverse Mortgages’. Les Shepard, Talk on Genes Reunited, M ick Storey, Sales Manager of Office Technology, shared his knowledge in computers and later Dr Johanna Vogel spoke on how the business was founded .

Terry Lewis together with Angela unexpectedly gave a very enlightening talk on their experiences travelling all over Western Australia in a motorhome with a trailer full of computers. Their company, NetFX Internet also built a website call CountrySite to provide people with” Trainer Wheels” for the Internet! In 1991 Terry was just messing around with computers! Angela his wife became aware that this new interest could lend itself to helping and teaching the unemployed.

They commenced their own training business in 1996 and went from having a specialised Internet training centre in Leederville to travelling the State in a motorhome delivering training to people in remote towns, cattle stations and aboriginal communities.

Peel Seniornet participated in a display at Centro Shopping Centre on 28th June.

President Merv was on duty all day joined by a band of volunteers from members.

The Trade Table – was re-introduced and gave an extra attraction at the occasional Open Meeting and was well received. Members simple displayed computer related goods together with a description, the cost, etc. in an envelope with members name visible.

Enjoying a visit to Geranium

World.
